2019 Nigeria Pyrolysis And Waste Oil Distillation Project

A Nigerian Customer Ordered A Tire Pyrolysis And Waste Oil Distillation Solution (Installed In December 2019).

Nigerian waste engine oil distillation in December 2019-12

In December 2019 a Nigerian waste-management/energy customer ordered a combined solution: a 20 t/day tyre-to-oil pyrolysis plant paired with a pyrolysis oil distillation machine to produce diesel-range fuel for local sale.
The customer’s goals were to

(a) divert end-of-life tyres from landfill/open burning,

(b) produce saleable diesel substitute for local use,

(c) monetise by-products (recovered carbon black and steel).

Configuring Solutions For Clients

Hardware & scope (summary):

  • 20 t/day continuous tyre pyrolysis reactor (feed handling, reactor, condensers, oil tank, gas recovery, PLC control). Equipment price range for continuous pyrolysis plants varies widely; medium-quality 20 t/day kits are typically offered in the tens to low hundreds of thousands USD.

  • Pyrolysis-oil distillation/refinery unit sized to match oil throughput (to recover diesel fraction), with basic decolorization & adsorption polishing.

  • Auxiliaries: oil storage, fuel transfer pumps, off-gas capture and use (heat), carbon black handling (drying, bagging), steel separation & scrap handling.

  • Services: shipping, on-site installation, training, commissioning, basic fuel quality testing.

    Fast Delivery

We have sufficient stock of pyrolysis and distillation equipment to ensure efficient logistics and fast delivery.

    Operation Scheme: 20 t/day × 330 operational days/year6,600 t/year feedstock.

Pyrolysis oil yield (waste tyre → crude pyrolysis oil): conservatively 42% by weight (typical ranges ~40–50% depending on tyre type & process).

Distillation diesel yield (pyro oil → diesel fraction): conservatively 85% mass recovery of crude pyro oil as diesel after distillation/upgrading (typical commercial plants quote ~80–90% depending on feed).

    Mass flows (annual):

    • Feedstock (waste tyres): 6,600 t/year

    • Crude pyrolysis oil (42%): 2,772 t/year (= 6,600 × 0.42)

    • Diesel mass after distillation (85% of pyro oil): 2,356.2 t/year (= 2,772 × 0.85)

Volume (diesel): convert mass → liters using diesel density ≈ 0.85 kg/L

    • 2,356.2 t = 2,356,200 kg → liters = 2,356,200 / 0.85 ≈ 2,772,000 L/year

So, ~2.77 million liters of diesel/year.

    ROI(return on investment):

Because diesel sale price, carbon grade/price, feedstock cost and OPEX can vary a lot, here’s a conservative alternative:

    Conservative Calculation:
    Diesel wholesale / lower price: ₦180 / L
    Carbon black price: USD 150 / t
    Steel price: USD 100 / t
Feedstock cost: ₦20,000 / t (collection paid by plant)
    OPEX USD 150,000 / year
    Conservative results (annual):
    Total revenue ≈ ₦642,553,560
    Annual costs (feed + OPEX) ≈ ₦186,391,500
    Annual gross profit ≈ ₦456,162,060
    ROI ≈ 4.84 (484%), payback ≈ 0.21 years (~2.5 months)

The project remains highly attractive in this calculation — largely because of the large diesel volume produced from 20 t/day feedstock.

    Other Cases

    Conclusion

A 20 t/day tyre→oil→distill project installed in Nigeria (Dec 2019) can produce ~2.77 million liters of diesel per year, plus large quantities of recovered carbon black and scrap steel.

Using Dec 2019 local prices and a mid-range equipment cost estimate, the revenue potential is large and simple payback (pre-tax, pre-finance) can be measured in months under the optimistic calculations shown above.

However, those headline returns depend critically on fuel quality, realistic sale prices (wholesale vs retail), regulatory compliance costs, and reliable feedstock logistics.
