Indonesian Re-Purchase Four Pyrolysis Plants

In December 2021, an Indonesian customer repurchased four pyrolysis plants.

Project Background: Scaling Sustainable Energy in Indonesia

In December 2021, a waste management company based in Indonesia, finalized its second major investment: the procurement of four additional pyrolysis plants.

Having successfully operated their first unit since 2019, the client aimed to capitalize on the increasing market price of industrial heating oil (pyrolysis oil) and the abundance of low-cost feedstock (scrap tires). The primary goal was to transition from a pilot-scale operation to a full-scale industrial waste processing hub.

Despite the global logistics challenges of late 2021, the project focused on high-efficiency recovery and strict adherence to Indonesian environmental regulations regarding emissions.

Configuring Solutions For Clients

The Standard Solution: Multi-Reactor Pyrolysis System

  • To maximize throughput and maintain operational flexibility, our engineering team developed a modular solution featuring four Batch Pyrolysis Units.
  • Key Technical Components:
Horizontal Rotary Reactors: Designed for uniform heating and a long service life, even under continuous high-temperature cycles.
  • “Three-in-One” Oil Discharging System: An integrated system combining condensing, liquefying, and storage, which simplifies the installation process and increases oil cooling efficiency.
  • Advanced Dedusting System: To comply with local air quality standards, the plants were equipped with magnetic water desulfurization and “activated carbon” absorption towers.
  • Combustible Gas Recycling: A system that redirects non-condensable gases back to the furnace to serve as fuel, significantly reducing external energy costs.

Project Results
The following data represents the performance and financial indicators verified after the first year of operation (2022-2023).

Performance Results:
Four production units implemented staggered shifts to ensure continuous product production.

MetricValue
Annual Waste Tire Processing Capacity18,000 Tons
Average Pyrolysis Oil Yield45% (8,100 Tons/Year)
Average Carbon Black Yield35% (6,300 Tons/Year)
Average Steel Wire Yield12% (2,160 Tons/Year)

In this case study, financial performance figures are estimated in US dollars.

A. Estimated Annual Revenue: Pyrolysis oil: 8,100 tons x $500/ton = $4,050,000

Carbon black: 6300 tons x $60/ton = $378,000; Steel wire: 2160 tons x $120/ton = $259,200

Total annual revenue: $4,687,200

B. Investment and Operating Costs Total initial investment (CAPEX): Approximately $1,400,000.

Annual operating costs (OPEX): Approximately $2,100,000 (including raw material procurement, labor, electricity, and maintenance).

Annual net profit = $4,687,200 – $2,100,000 = $2,587,200

In this scenario, the customer achieved a complete “return on investment” for the equipment in less than 7 months of full operation.

Conclusion

The Indonesian project serves as a prime example of how circular economy principles can be highly profitable. By scaling from a single unit to a four-plant configuration, the customer achieved significant economies of scale, reducing the per-unit cost of labor and administration.

The success of this second purchase was driven by three factors:

  • Reliable Technology: The 45% oil yield remained consistent, ensuring predictable revenue.
  • Environmental Compliance: The system’s ability to meet local emission standards prevented costly legal hurdles.
  • Market Timing: Capitalizing on the high demand for industrial fuel in the Southeast Asian manufacturing sector.

This project underscores that with the right equipment and localized strategy, waste tire pyrolysis is not just an environmental service, but a high-yield industrial investment.
