Skid-Mounted Waste Engine Oil Distillation

A Skid-Mounted Waste Engine Oil Distillation System In Zimbabwe, Implemented In September 2024.

Skid-mounted waste oil distillation equipment in Zimbabwe, September 2024-3

Project Background

In September 2024, a Zimbabwe-based waste oil recycling client invested in a skid-mounted waste engine oil distillation system to convert collected used lubricants into reusable fuel products. The client was facing two major challenges: rising volumes of waste engine oil from local garages, transport fleets, and industrial maintenance workshops, and the growing cost of purchasing new fuel for internal operations. At the same time, the client wanted a compact, fast-installation solution that could be deployed on a limited industrial site without extensive civil construction.

Because the project site had restricted space and needed quick commissioning, a skid-mounted layout was selected. This allowed the main process units, piping, pumps, controls, and safety components to be pre-assembled in modules before shipping, reducing on-site installation time and lowering project risk. The goal was not only waste disposal, but also resource recovery—turning a problematic waste stream into a stable revenue source.

Professional Solution Developed for the Client

To meet the client’s operational and commercial goals, a skid-mounted waste engine oil distillation system was designed with a compact, modular structure and a fully integrated process flow. The solution began with a pretreatment stage to remove water, sludge, and solid impurities from the collected waste oil, ensuring stable feed quality and protecting the downstream equipment. After pretreatment, the oil was fed into the distillation unit, where controlled heating separated lighter fuel fractions from heavier contaminants under carefully managed temperature conditions.

The entire system was arranged on skid frames, which significantly simplified transportation, lifting, and installation at the Zimbabwe site. This modular approach was especially valuable because it minimized civil work, reduced commissioning time, and allowed the client to start production faster than with a traditional fixed plant. The package also included heat exchange efficiency improvements, automatic temperature monitoring, pressure protection, condensate recovery, and vapor management to improve safety and product consistency.

A key part of the solution was operational flexibility. The system was engineered to handle fluctuating feedstock quality, which is common in waste engine oil recovery projects. The control system was configured so operators could stabilize the process even when incoming oil varied in moisture content or contamination level. Training was provided for local operators covering feed preparation, startup and shutdown procedures, routine maintenance, and safety practices. As a result, the client received not only a machine, but a practical production solution designed for reliable long-term operation in local conditions.

Because this is a waste engine oil distillation project, the key performance indicators are best measured in terms of annual waste engine oil processing capacity, average distillate recovery yield, and annual fuel production.

Operational performance achieved:

  • Annual waste engine oil processing capacity: 3,000 tons/year

  • Average distillate recovery yield: 72%

  • Annual fuel production: 2,160 tons/year

Simple calculation:
3,000 tons/year × 72% = 2,160 tons/year of recovered fuel

Investment and return estimate:

  • Total project investment: USD 680,000

  • Average selling price of recovered fuel: USD 820/ton

  • Annual revenue: 2,160 × 820 = USD 1,771,200

  • Estimated annual operating cost: USD 1,020,000

  • Estimated annual gross profit: 1,771,200 − 1,020,000 = USD 751,200

ROI calculation:
ROI = (Annual gross profit ÷ Total investment) × 100%
ROI = (751,200 ÷ 680,000) × 100% = 110.5%

This result showed that the project had strong economic potential, with the recovered fuel output supporting both internal fuel demand and commercial sales.

Conclusion

The Zimbabwe skid-mounted waste engine oil distillation project, implemented in September 2024, demonstrated how a compact modular system can turn waste oil into a profitable and practical energy resource. The skid-mounted design reduced installation complexity, shortened commissioning time, and made the solution suitable for sites with limited space. With stable processing capacity, strong recovery yield, and attractive ROI, the project delivered both environmental and financial value.

Overall, this case shows that waste oil recycling is not only a waste management solution, but also a viable industrial business model when supported by the right equipment design, process control, and operator training.
